The Verge Project: A Powerful Electrical Journey

The Verge stands as one of Faradays Electrical’s most meaningful and technically complex achievements — a full shopping centre powered from the ground up. With every cable route, DB board, tenant fit-out, and final inspection, The Verge became more than just a project. It became a tribute, a team accomplishment, and a reflection of the legacy of our late colleague, Christo, whose vision shaped the early foundation of the electrical infrastructure.

Under the leadership of Branch Manager Jeff Husbands and Gauteng Project Manager Jean-Pierre du Plooy, the Faradays team carried that vision forward with dedication and heart — ensuring that every shop, system, and installation reflected the excellence Christo was known for.

This is the electrical journey behind the Verge.

The electrical scope at the Verge covered every corner of the shopping centre — from base-build infrastructure through to tenant-specific installations. The team handled:

  • Full cable route layout
  • Wireway installation throughout the centre
  • Distribution board installations for all tenants
  • Complete electrical works for stores including Pick n Pay, Mugg & Bean, City Pets, Kimbo, Souvla Braai, and 3@1

With multiple tenants and overlapping timelines, Faradays ran dedicated electrical teams for each retailer while keeping progress aligned with the centre’s overall construction deadlines. Sequencing shifted frequently, but the team stayed a step ahead, adjusting plans seamlessly to maintain momentum.

Before his passing, Christo completed nearly 80% of the early electrical planning and installation coordination. He worked closely with engineers and architects to determine cable routes, technical layouts, and compliance requirements — setting a strong foundation for the build.

His sudden loss impacted the team deeply. Emotionally, they felt the absence of a leader, mentor, and friend. Operationally, Christo’s specialised knowledge created gaps that had to be filled carefully and quickly so the project could continue.

Jeff and Jean stepped in with purpose — honouring Christo’s groundwork, maintaining the standards he set, and ensuring the project followed the vision he had established. Their leadership bridged planning and practicality, allowing the far-reaching electrical work at the Verge to progress without compromise.

The electrical environment at the Verge was complex, demanding both precision and adaptability. Some of the most challenging installations included:

High-Voltage and Specialized Systems
  • Transformers, switchgear, and protection relays
  • Generator integration and automatic transfer switches
  • Battery bank and backup power systems
Space-Constrained Routing

Tight service routes required intricate cabling pathways that avoided structural clashes and supported long-term maintenance.

Tenant-Specific Requirements

Each retailer had unique electrical demands, influencing:

  • Circuit sizing
  • DB configurations
  • Emergency lighting layouts
  • Additional power capacity in conduits and trays
  • Strategic outlet and floor box placements

To uphold standards across the build, Faradays implemented:

  • Regular toolbox talks and training
  • Strict PPE requirements
  • Continuous safety audits
  • Compliance checks aligned with all relevant industry regulations

No compromises — only safe, compliant, quality installations throughout the Verge.

A standout component of the Verge was the inclusion of apprentices from Ekurhuleni West College. They received hands-on experience in:

  • Real-world electrical installations
  • Problem-solving alongside experienced electricians
  • Safety protocols and high-risk environments
  • Practical training aligned to future certification

This collaboration strengthened the team and enriched the project. Senior electricians guided apprentices in tackling challenges, improving quality control, and developing a new generation of electrical talent.
