Leon van der Westhuizen – Leading with Transparency and Tenacity

Leon Van der Westhuizen, Durban Branch Manager at faradays Electrical South Africa.

For Leon van der Westhuizen, the path to Faradays Electrical was as unexpected as it was rewarding. Having built a solid career in management across multiple industries — from banking to fruit production and manufacturing — Leon’s introduction to Faradays came when Danny Talhami began searching for a Durban Branch Manager. That opportunity would mark the beginning of a journey that has now spanned 15 years, shaping both his professional identity and personal growth.

Before joining Faradays, Leon gained valuable management experience at various national companies, transitioning into the electrical industry was a new challenge — but one that, with Danny’s mentorship and the Faradays team’s support, quickly became a passion.

Reflecting on his proudest moments, Leon recalls the satisfaction of seeing projects come to life and the immense pride he felt when Danny’s final inspections went “99.9% smooth, with a thanks and well done.” Those moments of shared achievement continue to drive his commitment to excellence.

Leon’s leadership style is rooted in transparency, teamwork, and humility. He believes in working alongside his team, facing challenges together, and never being too proud to give credit where it’s due. “A happy team is a happy result,” he says — a principle that has become central to his management philosophy.

His early career lessons remain his compass: “Always be honest and transparent. Learn from mistakes and never repeat them. Never give up and you will never fail.”

When asked what “Powered by People, Proven in Projects” means to him, Leon doesn’t hesitate — “Success.”
For him, success is built on understanding client needs, delivering on commitments, and never hesitating to adapt. His goals for the year ahead include expanding the Durban branch’s footprint, nurturing long-standing client relationships, and ensuring continued growth, profitability, and sustainability.

Leon fosters innovation through openness and inclusion, keeping his team engaged with Faradays’ broader vision. He motivates them to seek out opportunities for improvement — both professionally and personally — and to proudly represent Faradays wherever they go.

He’s energised by the new technologies and developments shaping the electrical industry and believes Faradays stands apart through its culture of integrity, people-first values, and unwavering service excellence. “It’s a no-brainer,” Leon says. “It’s just amazing to be part of this company and to always walk the extra mile.”

His guiding principle is simple yet powerful: “Our people are our biggest investment. Be honest with clients, be transparent, and operate the business as if it were your own.”

Leon’s daily motivation comes from knowing he’s part of the Faradays family, taking on new challenges and achieving goals alongside his team.

Outside of work, he finds balance in the great outdoors, tackling 4×4 off-road challenges with his wife and children. His adventurous spirit mirrors his leadership approach — when told not to take on a challenge, he’s often the first to try.

Faith, family, and respect guide Leon’s outlook on life. He attributes his leadership values to his upbringing, his wife’s encouragement, and his faith in the Lord.

Those who work closely with him would likely describe him with a smile — “full of nonsense, but honest.” It’s this combination of humour, authenticity, and integrity that makes Leon a respected and relatable leader.

Faradays operates nationally, with teams in Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town.
